    Description

    This 9" blue & white transfer ware plate was made by David Johnston & Co. David Johnston & Co.worked from 1834-1844 in Bordeaux France. David Johnston was of Anglo-Irish decent and moved to France where he opened up a pottery. He also became Major of Bordeaux France from 1838-1842. The plate closely follows the tradition of fine English transfer ware and has a marvelous highly detailed scene and border design. The transfer is sharp and clear. The body is of the pearl ware type and the glaze rich and lustrous.Clearly, this plate exhibits very skilled work! In addition it is in superb and perfect condition showing little to no use.
